In 2022, 11-year NBA veteran Reggie Bullockpurchased a private island in Placencia, Belize, for $2.2 million. At first, Bullock thought it would be the perfect retirement home for him and his family.
Away from the bustling city life in the United States, life on an island in Central America, which borders the Caribbean Sea, would be a stark contrast – peaceful, relaxing and with an incredible view of nature.
However, three years later, Bullock has decided to share his private island with the public, but of course, for a fee. Just recently, construction for the $10 million “Bullock Island” was completed.
Now, Reggie has gone from retired NBA player to resort owner.
“I was building it as my dream home, but got caught up in the tourism industry and made it a flip,” Bullock said.
He fell in love with a heart-shaped island in Belize
Bullock was the 25th overall pick of the 2013 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers. And although he had several good years with the Detroit Pistons and the New York Knicks, he never blossomed into a star in the NBA. Bullock retired after the 2023-24 season, at the age of 32.
But before he spent his last NBA year with the Houston Rockets, he played two years for the Dallas Mavericks.
Although he had a decent stint in Dallas, averaging 7.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in 146 games played, it was meeting Dennis Smith Jr. that became life-changing, as Smith introduced him to private islands for sale.
Bullock said he did some research and then found this heart-shaped island in Belize. With one of his children named Heart, he swooped in and bought the property.
“I was just going to live in it, have it as a vacation home. But now I’m just going the resort way, allowing people to rent out this home and have the six other villas that I’ll have for people to be able to rent off,” he added.
Bullock Island is now operational
Today, “Bullock Island” is now open to the public and its amenities include the four-room main villa, which was supposed to be Reggie’s retirement house, one 2-bedroom bungalow and five oceanfront one-bedroom cabanas.
The five-acre property also has an ocean view pool, on-site restaurant, beach bar, open-air gym and spa.
Interested guests can book via www.bullockislandbelize.com and upon checking their website, the rates include $5,400 per night for the villa, $2,900 for the suite and $1,700 for the cabanas. As of November 22, dates up to December 14 have been blocked off, meaning if you want to book a room there, December 15, 2025, would be the earliest, so business is doing well for Bullock.
Looking back at Reggie’s career, he made $53 million during an NBA career that went from 2013 to 2023. Considering there are 14 players who make at least $50 million this season, it’s not that much, as far as being an NBA player is concerned.
But while many who made more than Bullock have gone bankrupt after retirement, Reggie is enjoying the fruits of his labor with a brilliant $10 million investment.
