Mizzou men’s basketball is on a 6-0 run.
Through its first six nonconference games, the smallest margin of victory for the Tigers has been 18 points, with the exception of the five-point win over SEMO in their home opener. Most recently, they beat South Dakota to secure their sixth consecutive win.
On Tuesday, Mizzou will continue its homestand against South Carolina State as it goes for the lucky seven.
SC State also recently took on the Coyotes, losing by just one point. South Dakota rebounded from its 102-68 loss to Mizzou on Thursday and defeated the Bulldogs on Sunday 82-81.
The South Dakota defeat is one of SC State’s six losses this year. The Bulldogs enter the matchup against the Tigers still searching for their first win.
Cameron Clark led SC State in scoring vs. the Coyotes, shooting 50% from the field and scoring 17 points. Noah Treadwell contributed to the perimeter shooting for the Bulldogs, scoring 15 points, 12 from beyond the arc and the remaining three from the foul line.
Over half SC State’s points against the Coyotes came from the paint, with 42. Another facet of their game that aligns with Mizzou’s is their depth, as they scored 46 points off the bench.
The title of MU’s leading scorer remains with senior forward Mark Mitchell, who is averaging 18.7 points per game. The next two highest scorers belong to what coach Dennis Gates referred to as his sixth and seventh starters, graduate guards Jayden Stone and Jacob Crews. The two are averaging 13.3 and 13 points per game, respectively.
Looking at the Tigers’ depth, they seem to be running with a 12-man squad still as there have been no updates on Trent Pierce or Trent Burns returning to the court. Shawn Phillips Jr. was out of the last game, as well, due to illness. Both games the 7-foot center sat out, it was a game-time decision, so it’s possible Mizzou may be running an 11-man squad in Tuesday’s competition.
On the bright side for the Tigers, Annor Boateng stepped foot on the court for the first time this season in the last matchup, although on limited minutes.
A battle of paint points and depth could ensue in the Tigers-Bulldogs matchup at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mizzou Arena.
