Washington Wizards rookie guard Tre Johnson will be sidelined for at least a few weeks because of a strained left hip flexor, the team announced on Monday.
Johnson sustained the injury on Friday in a loss to the Toronto Raptors and was ruled out of playing on Saturday in a loss to the Chicago Bulls. Coach Brian Keefe said Johnson has been managing the injury since last season at Texas, according to Josh Robbins of The Athletic.
The team will provide updates on Johnson as appropriate. However, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Johnson is expected to miss “a handful of weeks.”
Johnson is averaging 11.5 points, three rebounds and 1.3 assists on 39.5% shooting from 3-point range. He ranks eighth in rookie scoring and has knocked down multiple 3-pointers in a game 10 times this season, which is tied for the second-most by a first-year player.
The 19-year-old has played a key role for Keefe, mostly off the bench to begin the season. He has showcased his dynamic scoring ability on offense in the early going, while pushing the pace to generate paint touches and easy looks for his teammates.
Johnson has earned praise for his work ethic and ability on both ends of the court. He and the team will be hopeful that the lottery pick can return to the court quickly and miss minimal time.
