WASHINGTON — A strained left hip flexor will sideline Washington Wizards rookie Tre Johnson for the near future, coach Brian Keefe said Monday.
Keefe would not disclose the expected timeline for Johnson’s recovery, per team injury policy, but similar injuries often require two to four weeks to heal.
Johnson, a 6-foot-5 swingman, suffered the same injury during his one-and-done year at the University of Texas last season, and Keefe said the Wizards have been cautious with Johnson’s playing time going back as far as the NBA Summer League in July.
Johnson aggravated the hip injury in a recent game and has logged fewer minutes than usual in games the past week against the Brooklyn Nets, Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors. He sat out Saturday’s narrow loss in Chicago.
“We’ll know more here in a couple of weeks, but he’s had a good start to the season for a guy who was playing through a lot of pain, averaging almost 12 points a game and close to 40 percent from 3,” Keefe said. “I’ve been impressed with him and his ability to play through some pain. That’s a pretty tough kid right there.”
The Wizards drafted Johnson sixth overall in June. Billed as one of the 2025 draft class’ best shooters, he arguably has exceeded expectations. In 24.2 minutes per game, Johnson is averaging 11.5 points and has made 39.5 percent of his 3-point attempts.
Cam Whitmore and Corey Kispert likely will receive higher-than-usual playing time during Johnson’s absence. Rookie Will Riley potentially could join Washington’s playing rotation as well.
