The Gators defeated Houston 65-63 Monday night at the Alamodome in San Antonio to win the program’s third national championship.
Former Florida basketball greats Walter Clayton Jr. and Will Richard met on the NBA basketball court on Monday, Nov. 24.
Richard’s Golden State Warriors defeated Clayton’s Utah Jazz 134 to 117. The duo, who helped lead Florida to a national championship last season, then exchanged and signed their respective jerseys.
In the matchup, Clayton recorded four assists, one rebound and one block in 17 minutes of action, while Richard posted nine points, six rebounds and two steals in 29 minutes of work.
Richard has had a productive rookie season as he has averaged 8.2 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 17 games and five starts. His season with the Warriors was recently highlighted with a 30-point game in his first career start.
Clayton has averaged 5.4 points, 3.2 assists and 2.1 rebounds for the Jazz this season. The No. 18 overall pick was recently sent down to Jazz’ G League affiliate, the Salt Lake City Stars, but was recalled a day before his meeting with Richard. In Clayton’s one game with the Stars he posted 20 points, going 4 of 13 with five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
The duo were two of three Gators drafted alongside guard Alijah Martin, who was taken in the second round and now plays for the Toronto Raptors.
