The Atlanta Hawks had been rolling without Trae Young (knee) entering Tuesday’s NBA Cup road clash against the floundering Washington Wizards. However, their progress came to a screeching halt, as they were thoroughly outplayed wire-to-wire, allowing Washington to snap its league-worst 14-game losing streak.

The embarrassing showing prompted NBA fans to pile on the aspiring Eastern Conference contender, with Hawks supporters pleading for Young’s imminent return.

Atlanta entered Tuesday with a 9-4 record with Young sidelined, having won two straight games and seven of its last nine contests. Meanwhile, Washington hadn’t won since its first victory of the season on the road against the Dallas Mavericks back on Oct. 24.

The matchup certainly didn’t reflect the teams’ records, though, as the Wizards led from start to finish, with their advantage ballooning as high as 33 points en route to a 132-113 blowout win.

Veteran guard CJ McCollum spearheaded Washington’s offensive outburst, recording a season-high 46 points, five rebounds, four assists, and 10 3-pointers on blistering 17-for-25 shooting (68%). Meanwhile, sophomore big man Alex Sarr chipped in 27 points, 11 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks, shooting a hyper-efficient 11-for-15 (73.3%).

Conversely, Hawks star forward Jalen Johnson struggled to make an impact, mustering seven points, seven rebounds, and seven assists on just 3-for-12 shooting (25%). Johnson’s muted offensive performance allowed the Wizards to get out to a 45-23 edge after the first quarter and assume control.

Following the surprisingly one-sided outcome, fans on X didn’t hold back on Atlanta, with some urging the team to throw in the towel on its season.

“YOU JUST LOST TO THE WIZARDS. YES, THE WIZARDS,” one fan said.

“Imagine losing to the wizards LMAOOO,” another wrote.

“Letting CJ drop 46 points with 10 3s on you just over one month away from 2026 should have your team relocated,” one user jeered.

“Pathetic f*cking franchise through and through. Season is already over,” another asserted.

“JALEN JOHNSON WITH A RUSSELL WESTBRICK TRIBUTE,” one more chimed in.

Others attempted to put to rest any discussions about the Hawks being better in their top playmaker’s absence.

“Where is the ‘hawks are better without trae crowd,’” one fan asked.

“This what hawks would look like in the playoffs without Trae,” another declared.

“Trae need to come back,” one more pleaded.

Atlanta (11-8) and Washington (2-15) are now both 1-2 in NBA Cup action in East Group A. The Hawks will look to redeem themselves during Friday’s home showdown against the Cleveland Cavaliers (12-7), a far more formidable intraconference foe.
