Oklahoma City Thunder vs Minnesota Timberwolves Preview

The Oklahoma City Thunder have looked impressive at the start of the new season and are currently riding a nine-game winning streak. They opened the season with an 8-0 run, lost only one game to the Portland Trail Blazers, and have continued their dominant form since. Interestingly, ahead of this matchup, they defeated the Trail Blazers 122-95, sending a clear message and avenging that earlier loss. In exactly 30 minutes of play, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 37 points with seven assists, five rebounds, and an efficient 13/18 shooting from the field.

Gilgeous-Alexander is once again one of the main MVP contenders this season, averaging 32.2 points, 6.6 assists, five rebounds, and an impressive 41% from three-point range. It’s worth noting that the Thunder have a 17-1 record even though Jalen Williams, a key player in last season’s title run, has not yet played this season. Oklahoma City boasts the league’s best defense, allowing just 105 points per 100 possessions, while their offense ranks fourth, scoring 120.9 points per 100 possessions — an impressive balance. Chet Holmgren is having an excellent season, averaging 18.3 points and eight rebounds, while Isaiah Hartenstein is posting a double-double average with 12 points and 11 rebounds per game. Given their strong start, it looks very difficult for any team to match them, and they are rightfully considered early favorites for the title.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, on the other hand, have experienced many ups and downs at the start of the season. Some of this was understandable early on, as Anthony Edwards, their best player, missed several games. However, recent performances have raised questions. The Timberwolves sit at 10-7, seventh in the Western Conference, coming into this matchup after back-to-back losses. They first lost to the Phoenix Suns 114-113 and then fell to the Sacramento Kings in overtime 117-112, despite winning six of their previous seven games.

Fatigue was clearly a factor, but a lack of focus also played a role. The Sacramento Kings, on paper, have many quality players but are one of the weakest defensive teams in the league. The Timberwolves failed to exploit this, even though Edwards scored 43 points on 16-29 shooting, including five threes from 11 attempts. Only he performed at a high level, while Donte DiVincenzo scored 17 points on 5-14 shooting, Julius Randle went 5-13, Naz Reid 6-15, and Jaden McDaniels struggled with 3-10 from the field. It’s clear Edwards needs offensive support, as he cannot carry the team alone. The bigger issue is the team’s defensive inconsistency — relying too heavily on scoring can lead to surprising losses, like the one against the Kings. They cannot afford a repeat performance against the Thunder if they hope to compete, or another defeat seems inevitable.

Oklahoma City Thunder vs Minnesota Timberwolves Best Betting Tip and Prediction

The Oklahoma City Thunder have the league’s best defense by a wide margin, while the Minnesota Timberwolves are also among the top five. However, the Thunder’s offensive potential and team play currently promise much more than the Timberwolves, who rely heavily on how Anthony Edwards performs. We also believe Julius Randle does not have the necessary toughness to make a significant impact in this matchup. In the last three games between these teams in Oklahoma City, the results were 124-94, 118-103, and 114-88, clearly showing that the Timberwolves struggle on this road court. For all these reasons, we believe the posted point spread is too high and that the teams will combine for fewer total points.
