Donovan Mitchell is close to making history with the Cleveland Cavaliers. So far in the team’s franchise history, LeBron James is the only player to average 30+ points per game. James has accomplished the feat on two separate occasions.
As for Mitchell, he’s 0.1 points shy of hitting the 30-point mark. This season, the star guard is averaging 29.9 points. While it’s clear that Mitchell’s hard work is paying off, he credits his fiancée, Coco Jones, for his success.

Donovan Mitchell is Grateful to His Fiancée Coco Jones
In July 2025, Mitchell and Jones publicly announced their engagement on social media. The two stars have been dating since 2023 and have decided to take their relationship to the next level.
Since getting engaged, it seems that the Cavaliers’ star has been motivated all season long. Aside from averaging a career-best 29.9 points this season, Mitchell has also efficiently helped Cleveland remain among the elite teams in the Eastern Conference.
While there’s no denying that it’s because of Mitchell’s superb performances that the Cavaliers are still a contending team this season, the star guard credited his fiancée, Jones, for his motivation.
“As a player, you’re really trying to just be the best that you can be, right?” Mitchell told Andscape. “The work. The film study. The sacrifices you make, whether it’s changing your diet, what you do in your treatments. So, when I get there on the floor, I’m calm. But also, I’m really at peace with myself with where I’m at.”
He added that much of his career has been spent trying to prove himself, embracing the underdog mentality. Mitchell noted he still feels overlooked at times and believes he does not always receive the credit he deserves, though he understands that perception.
“But when you’re finally at a place where you’re at peace, but also life is peaceful,” Mitchell continued. “When you find a person who really brings you to a space of calm. When you’re in a calm space in life and realize that basketball isn’t just the end all, be all, you’re able to be in a position mentally that you just don’t know until you’re there. And I give [Jones] a lot of credit for that, and I appreciate her for that because she brings me that as well as what I do, obviously.”
The Cavaliers, with a 12-7 record, are in fourth place in the East. They are only three games behind the top team in the conference, the Detroit Pistons, who have a 15-3 record. With a long regular season ahead, Cleveland still has plenty of time to climb the ranks and prove they’re the best team in the conference.
