The Memphis Grizzlies haven’t been a factor in the league’s Emirates NBA Cup since it started two years ago, but this season is different.
The Grizzlies (7-12) are playing the Los Angeles Clippers at Intuit Dome on Nov. 28 with a chance to clinch a berth in the knockout stage of the in-season tournament. Memphis will need to win and get point-differential help from the game between the Phoenix Suns and Oklahoma City Thunder.
Memphis has played better basketball of late, winning three of its past four games. That stretch has come without Ja Morant and the other three rostered point guards, all out with injuries.
Those four players will remain out against the Clippers (5-13), but the emergence of Vince Williams Jr. has helped Memphis survive. Williams is coming off a 17-assist performance in the 133-128 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Nov. 26.
The Clippers are led by James Harden and Kawhi Leonard. While Leonard missed time due to an ankle injury, Harden paced the offense and has been one of the NBA’s top scorers in his past five games.
Memphis has lost the past six games to the Clippers, with a 51-60 all-time record against them.
