After the 2020 season, it seemed like the Memphis Grizzlies found their cornerstone piece when Ja Morant won Rookie of the Year. If someone said after that season that they would look to trade him within a few years, that person would have been branded as crazy.

Now, the idea of a breakup between Morant and the team that drafted him is a real possibility.

Memphis Grizzlies Predicted To Cut Ties With Their Star This Season

Things were looking up for the Grizzlies as they built a future around Morant. They had a young core with a lot of promise, and for a brief period, they appeared to be the emerging force in the West.

Now, the rumors are suggesting that they are ready to turn to a new chapter, starting with a Morant trade.

According to ‘Bleacher Report‘, the Toronto Raptors are a likely destination for the disgruntled star. In exchange, the Grizzlies would get back Immanuel Quickley, Gradey Dick, a 2026 second-rounder, and a top-three protected first-round pick in 2028.

Memphis would lose the supposed focal point of its offense, but would gain a reliable point guard in Quickley. He doesn’t have Morant’s hops or explosiveness at the hoop, but he is a reliable facilitator who can score on all three levels.

Dick also gives them a floor-spacer whose game is still in the early stages of development. He has suffered a significant dip in his production this season, but this can be attributed to his decrease in playing time.

He has yet to start this season and has seen only 16.1 minutes of action per game, a significant drop from the 29.4 minutes he averaged as a full-time starter last season.

As for the Raptors, they’ll get a third All-Star caliber talent to pair with Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram. Potentially, they can become the most potent offense in the Eastern Conference with this trio.

Morant is in the third year of a five-year contract worth $197,230,450. His production has decreased this season to the point where the value of this contract can be questioned. He is on pace to put up his lowest scoring average since his rookie year at 17.9 points per game, and he is shooting career-low percentages both inside and outside the arc.

However, this can be attributed to the team’s new system under coach Tuomas Iisalo. A system that doesn’t appear to mesh well with the star’s style of play.

A change of scenery might very well be what he needs to return to the high level of basketball that fans have grown accustomed to seeing from him.
