Jaylen Brown’s Saturday night was one of mixed emotions. The Boston Celtics were narrowly defeated by the Minnesota Timberwolves at Target Center, but the shooting guard matched a feat only the legendary Larry Bird had achieved in a Celtics jersey.

Brown equals rare Larry Bird feat

Brown racked up an impressive 41 points against Minnesota, for whom the brilliant Anthony Edwards registered 39. The Boston star also finished with seven assists, six rebounds, five steals and one block in his 34 minutes on the court.

As highlighted by NBA Stats on X, that makes Brown the only Celtics player other than Bird to record 40 or more points, five or more rebounds, five or more assists and five or more steals in a single NBA game.

Bird, who played for Boston between 1979 and 1992, managed that stat line twice, so Brown still has a way to go to equal the three-time MVP.

Celtics slip despite Brown’s big night

Despite Brown’s exploits, the Celtics were defeated 119-115 after giving up an eight point halftime advantage. The loss leaves Joe Mazzulla’s team with a 10-9 record and in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, which would be good enough for a spot in the play-in tournament as it stands.

Boston aims for a playoff push

The 2024 NBA champions will be hoping to mount a concerted playoff push in the coming months. Following Saturday’s game, they are half a game behind the eighth-placed Philadelphia 76ers and one and a half games back of the Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic, who sit fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.
