Chris Paul has gone through a chaotic turn of events following the Los Angeles Clippers’ decision to cut ties with him.
Among the teams who would be interested in acquiring the services of the veteran guard and 12-time NBA All-Star, would the New York Knicks be one of them? A team insider provided his insight into the potential scenario.
What Knicks Insider Said About Chris Paul Rumors
Paul has garnered respect as one of the greatest point guards the league has ever seen throughout its history.
Paul was going through the 21st season of his career, one which he later revealed to be his last in the league. He hoped to end it with the Clippers, where he headlined the show as the franchise star from 2011 to 2017.
However, things took a shocking turn when the team’s front office made the decision to send him home and cut ties with him amid a slow start to the 2025-26 season. This means that Paul’s time with the squad ended after he made 16 appearances on the court this season, particularly as a bench player.
At age 40, Paul is far from the superstar guard he used to be during his first Clippers stint. However, his experience and elite ability to make plays on the ball remain valuable for teams wanting stability at the guard position.
Knicks insider Ian Begley gave his thoughts on the idea of New York pursuing Paul for guard depth on top of rumors surrounding Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo. For the former, he sees the potential there can be for the team in landing the veteran playmaker, but he has heard it wouldn’t be a major possibility for both parties.
“I was told [it’s] highly unlikely that Chris Paul ends up here via trade or otherwise. It’s not something that maybe either side is looking at, but [it] certainly doesn’t seem to be something you’re going to see with this team, but they do maybe need some point guard help, but I don’t think the Paul thing will change,” Begley said, via SNY’s YouTube channel.
“One thing I should note is that, you know, people in touch with the team said they like this team, they like this group, they believe in this group, and that applies to Giannis as well. I mean, obviously, you go after Giannis if you can, but they do really like this team, and what they’ve seen so far.”
Paul averaged 2.9 points, 3.3 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per game in the 16 contests he played for the Clippers this season.
What Lies Ahead for Knicks?
It would be an interesting idea for the Knicks to consider if they look to have an experienced floor general like Paul handling the second unit.
They currently have Jalen Brunson commanding the first unit while Jordan Clarkson and Tyler Kolek splitting duties in the second unit. It could have Paul present himself as a potential addition to the roster if they wish to move forward with him, elevating the team’s playmaking on the offensive side of the ball.
New York boasts a 14-7 record on the season, holding the third spot in the Eastern Conference standings. They are 0.5 games above the Miami Heat and 1.5 games above the Orlando Magic, while trailing the Toronto Raptors by 0.5 games and the Detroit Pistons by 2.5 games.
The Knicks will continue preparations for their next matchup, which will be at home. They host the Utah Jazz on Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
