Perhaps Chris Paul could stay parked in Los Angeles for his next move.

Although the Los Angeles Clippers are cutting ties with the veteran guard soon, one NBA analyst suggests the Los Angeles Lakers could take advantage of the future Hall of Famer’s recent availability.

“The Los Angeles Lakers have an open roster spot and could be an option next month,” ESPN’s Bobby Marks wrote on Wednesday. “They are not allowed to sign a 15th player until Jan. 19.”

It’s not just the Lakers that Marks linked to Chris Paul. He mentioned several teams, including the Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers, and the Toronto Raptors, as they all have open roster spots. The Hawks would be in the best financial space to pick him up quickly.

In addition, Marks mentioned the Houston Rockets and the Phoenix Suns (both former CP homes), but noted that they have been thriving with their current situation.

Keep An Eye on the Lakers

When the Lakers are linked to a prominent veteran player—it’s best to take it seriously.

Face it, LA is a hot spot. And as long as they have LeBron James, the Lakers will have the right connections to reach out to notable veterans and put together an intriguing pitch to get them to join.

For what it’s worth, LeBron James praised Paul recently when the veteran forward found out that it was the seasoned guard’s final year in the NBA.

“We’ve known each other forever,” James told reporters one week ago.

“So, hell of a player—hell of a career—I can go on and on. It’s awesome. He has nothing to hang his head about. He’s done pretty much everything that this league has to offer. I just hope he takes it all in. This is the last hurrah, so we never get this moment again once you’re done to go out and be in an arena.”

At the time, it was assumed that Paul was going to finish out his second stint with the Clippers and call it a career. Now, the future is uncertain. One has to assume that Paul will get another look elsewhere. Since Paul has embraced a backup guard role, he could get a shot on a contending team.

Through 16 games with the Clippers, Paul averaged 14.3 minutes off the bench. It’s been a slow start to the season, as he posted averages of 2.9 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists, while shooting 32 percent from the field.

The Clippers have struggled mightily this year, posting a 5-16 record through the first quarter of the season. That’s no longer a Chris Paul issue. The only thing the guard has left to think about is where he’ll officially conclude his career.
