SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana men’s basketball team made a statement on Thursday night, knocking off NSIC preseason favorite Southwest Minnesota State 97-75 inside the Elmen Center.

The Vikings (4-3 overall, 2-0 NSIC) lit the net on fire, knocking down 60.7 percent of their shots from the field while going 17 of 24 from deep. The defense held their own, forcing the Mustangs (2-4, 1-1) to 39.0 percent shooting.

Tameron Ferguson recorded his second double-double in the last three games, scoring 26 points on 12 of 13 shooting while dishing 11 assists. Tanner Te Slaa added 19 points while knocking down 6 of 7 from deep and San Rensch scored 17 points and tied for a team-high with six rebounds.

After a Mustang layup opened the scoring, the Viking offense got rolling. Ferguson evened the scoring with a jumper and Rensch knocked down a 3-pointer off a Hinker steal to give AU its first lead of the night. Ferguson knocked down another mid-range and Te Slaa hit from deep to close a 10-2 run in the first 2:43 of the game.

After five quick SMSU points, Ferguson and Hinker each knocked down 3-pointers, Ferguson added a fast break dunk off a Rensch steal and Markus Talley hit one from long range to extend the lead to 21-7 at the 11:57 mark of the first half.

Three consecutive 3-pointers from the Mustangs brought them within five points before another Viking flurry. Hinker knocked down another 3-pointer and Fried got a layup off a Ferguson feed. After an SMSU free throw, Ferguson added a 3-pointer of his own and Amari Westmoreland-Vendiola got a layup to make it 31-17 at the 5:29 mark in the half. The Mustangs marched back, cutting their deficit to 37-26 at half.

A 3-point parade opened the second half with Te Slaa trading with Mason Lund of SMSU and Fried mixed a dunk in as AU built its lead back up to 48-32 with 16:36 to play. That lead quickly evaporated to 48-39 following a 7-0 Mustang run in two minutes.

With the lead down to 53-45, the offense started trudging forward. Brady Helgren converted an and-one and Ferguson got a layup. After a Mustang three, Ferguson scored a pair of twos and Rensch hit from deep to make it 65-48 AU at the 8:17 mark. A pair of SMSU free throws were countered by a Hinker and-one and four more Mustang points sandwiched a Ferguson layup to make it 70-54 AU with seven minutes to play.

With the lead at 14 with 6:02 to play, a 13-2 run inflated the Viking lead. Six Rensch points and four Fried points helped boost AU to an 86-61 lead with 3:40 to play and the teams traded buckets the rest of the way to bring the game to its final score.

The Vikings will continue its NSIC stretch on Saturday afternoon, taking on Sioux Falls at the Stewart Center at 3 p.m.
