DETROIT — Detroit Pistons star guard Cade Cunningham made his prediction for the NFC’s Super Bowl contender.
And it might not be something Lions fans want to here.
Cunningham, 24, has become one of Detroit’s elite athletes as a Piston, but the Arlington, Texas native will be the first to espouse his love for the Dallas Cowboys.
“(The Cowboys are) going to the Super Bowl,” Cunningham said during an interview with NFL on Prime. “That’s how I feel.”
Cunningham was present at Ford Field Thursday night for a marquee game between the Lions and the Cowboys and made an appearance on the pregame show alongside former NFL players Ryan Fitzpatrick and Richard Sherman.
Growing up in Arlington, where the Cowboys’ home stadium is, Cunningham remains a major Cowboys fan even since being drafted by the Pistons with the first overall pick in 2021.
Earlier this year, he went viral for saying during an interview that he could play football and mentioned he wold play for either the Lions or Cowboys and joked he could take Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott’s job after a few months.
But with the Cowboys winning three straight games and Prescott throwing for 320 yards and two touchdowns against the Kansas City Chiefs last week, Cunningham admitted that take may have been a bit too far.
“He looks good right now. Last week he was balling,” Cunningham said. “I respect the craft, he’s been doing this for too long. I understand now, I was tripping that day when I said that.”
During the interview, Cunningham was sure to bang the drum for the city and the recent boom from its sports teams.
The Pistons are currently the top team in the Eastern Conference with a 17-5 record after rattling off 13 straight wins during October and November.
“It’s fun times. I think the city has brought a lot of life to the success that we’ve had on the field and on the court,” Cunningham said. “It’s a great place to be doing it. It’s cool to be a part of and it’s cool to watch as far as the Lions and the (Red) Wings and all the success that’s coming around.”
Cunningham couldn’t help but finish the interview wishing the city of Detroit and “my ‘Boys” good luck ahead of a huge matchup.
