The Los Angeles Clippers are on the path to their worst season in over 15 years.
The Clippers have been one of the better teams for the past decade and a half, but as things stand, they are one of the worst teams in the league. Los Angeles is looking like the Clippers of old thus far, even with star players like James Harden and Kawhi Leonard.
However, throw in the fact that their roster is old, they are an injury-plagued team and have chemistry problems, and you have a recipe for disaster for Los Angeles. There appears to be nothing out there that can save this team, other than possibly trading their star player, Leonard.

The 34-year-old superstar is currently in his sixth season in LA, and there is a chance this could be his last. Michael Pina of The Ringer recently urged the Clippers to trade Leonard to their Western Conference rival, the Portland Trail Blazers.
“My favorite hypothetical would send Kawhi to the Portland Trail Blazers for Jerami Grant, Robert Williams III, and two first-round picks. If you’re the Blazers—an organization that has no identifiable timeline—Leonard is in many ways the grounding force they’re looking for. If they can land him and keep all their own first-round picks, it’s an opportunity they should absolutely consider. If you’re the Clippers, don’t fall victim to a sunk-cost fallacy. Get some picks, two good players who won’t kill your cap flexibility, and move on.”
Leonard has been available for 12 of the Clippers’ 22 games thus far. Injuries have been a cause of concern for the six-time All-Star in his career and especially in his Clippers tenure. His injury history is long and extensive, including a significant right knee issue that resulted in him missing the entire 2021-22 season, as well as a torn right meniscus in the 2023 playoffs.
The Blazers certainly have the pieces to make a big trade like this. In relation to what Pina said, the Blazers’ plan is a bit unclear as they have a mix of young and veteran players on their roster. Portland is certainly on the right track and a player like Leonard, despite his injury history, could propel them to becoming a stellar team in the loaded Western Conference.
The only challenge would be moving Leonard. Outside of his injury history, he is under contract through the 2026-27 season after signing a three-year, $513 million contract in January 2024.
