The Dallas Mavericks (8-16) kicked off the first night of a back-to-back on Friday, taking on the Oklahoma City Thunder (22-1), who put their 13-game win streak on the line. OKC kept their train rolling with a 132-111 drubbing. It just wasn’t Dallas’ night to extend the mini win streak of their own.
Here’s how each of the Mavericks graded out individually in the loss.
10 PTS / 3 REB / 4 AST / 0 STL / 0 BLK – 24 MIN
Nembhard had a decent game, though it looked pale relative to his recent string of success. His assist total was way down, but that was in large part due to limited minutes and his teammates shooting poorly overall. For an undersized player, tonight was a real test against a defensive stalwart, and he didn’t look particularly phased for most of the game, hitting 4-for-8 from the floor and two of his three three-point attempts.
12 PTS / 3 REB / 0 AST / 1 STL / 0 BLK – 22 MIN
Christie looked poised all night and made the most of limited opportunities, knocking down shot after shot (5-for-6 overall, 2-for-3 from deep). Solid game and great shooting in an outing that was otherwise nightmarish for the Mavs.
16 PTS / 2 REB / 2 AST / 0 STL / 0 BLK – 29 MIN
Flagg had a rough go that will hopefully ultimately serve to make him better. He faced the defending champs who threw him off his shooting game (other than a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line) and forced him into four turnovers. He stayed the course as best he could, showing he can still get points with aggressive foul-inducing moves, but couldn’t quite get it going in any real way.
18 PTS / 1 REB / 2 AST / 1 STL / 0 BLK – 27 MIN
Marshall has been excellent lately, and Friday night’s loss was no different. His rebounding and even assists could certainly have been higher, but he was the Mavs’ leading scorer for most of the night and shot lights out (8-for-11).
2 PTS / 8 REB / 6 AST / 0 STL / 1 BLK – 24 MIN
Davis had about as bad a first half as you could imagine, missing all four of his shot attempts and both of his free throw attempts. These things happen, especially when you have an injured finger and are working back from recently missing 14 straight games. Still, he just did not look good.
For whatever reason, he’s hopping, not leaping, for rebounds. On an OKC pseudo-fast break, his man stopped at the 3-point line, paused to get set and stroked the long jumper. Davis did not move to close out; he just let him shoot a wide-open shot. The second half was barely better, as coach Jason Kidd subbed him back in late in the game despite being down 30, likely to scrub the goose egg point total he was carrying to that point. I don’t know if he came in injured beyond just his finger, but he looked entirely futile in this one.
12 PTS / 3 REB / 3 AST / 0 STL / 0 BLK – 16 MIN
Russell looks like a new player lately. Early in the season, he was a self-styled go-to guy with less-than-stellar results. Since coming off the bench and playing off the ball, he has found a much better flow. He drilled a 3-pointer to tie the game at the end of the first quarter, made a fantastic pass along the baseline to Klay Thompson for another 3-ball and had a great no-look pass to Marshall for a score. All this in his first five minutes on the floor.
3 PTS / 5 REB / 0 AST / 0 STL / 1 BLK – 18 MIN
Thompson crashed back down to earth after putting together a nice run over the past few games. This was an ugly 1-for-7 shooting night paired with a decent rebounding total and not much else.
Dallas looked good for the first quarter and even parts of the second, but past that they were run straight out of the gym and straight back to Texas where they’ll play the Houston Rockets on Saturday. Flagg struggled, Davis no-showed and coach Kidd chose the better part of valor by waiving the white flag early.
A middling team that only just started finding it’s groove took on the reigning champion who came in with a 21-1 record and the result was a bludgeoning that wasn’t all that surprising given the Mavs’ injuries and ongoing development. We’ll see if they can flush this out of their system and fare better tomorrow.
