The Los Angeles Clippers sending Chris Paul home continues to see more fallout across the NBA. Most fans and former players have sided with Paul due to the Clippers coming off harsh for embarrassing one of the franchise’s greatest players. However, Ty Lue and Jeff Van Gundy clashing with Paul caused a real problem the Clippers felt had to be addressed.
Drama continues to fall out with the Clippers looking petty and coming off poorly. The Clippers recently removed all information about the upcoming Paul giveaway night in February. Paul joined Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, Bradley Beal, Nicolas Batum and Kris Dunn as the Clippers to have themed giveaways honoring them. Many fans viewed Paul as the best one since it’s his retirement season and for his accolades in Los Angeles.
No formal announcement was made explaining it, but the obvious reason is not wanting more controversy from reminding fans of Paul’s controversial departure. The Clippers have essentially cut all ties with Paul, despite the legendary point guard remaining on the roster. Fans excited about this giveaway will be let down.
Will The Clippers Replace Chris Paul?
Clippers fans will be upset if the Paul giveaway isn’t replaced with another bobblehead or different free item. Struggling teams often attract fans to the venue by having fun giveaways that make a specific game feel more valuable. Paul’s bobblehead should be replaced with another item since fans purchased tickets expecting a free item from that night.
The future of Paul is up in the air with the Clippers yet to reveal their overall plan. Paul will likely be shopped on the trade market after the mid-December restrictions end on players added in the offseason. No teams are expected to give up anything of note for an aging point guard that was unable to get rotation minutes on a losing team.
Paul could either be released or forced to spend the rest of the season at home while on the Clippers payroll. The situation is ugly and fans are losing out on a free bobblehead thanks to it.
Chris Paul’s Jersey Retirement In Question
It felt like a given that Paul’s jersey would be retired by the Clippers after his retirement was official. Paul and Blake Griffin are the names respected for their time in the 2010s decade of the Clippers to make the franchise relevant. Most fans would name Paul as the greatest player in franchise history for his contributions and for the lackluster list of all-time greats to play there.
The bad blood reaching this level of Paul being essentially blacklisted by the franchise is not good for the long-term future. Clippers management doesn’t even want fans to have merchandise involving Paul and to continue bringing attention to the situation.
More time will be needed for Paul’s wounds to heal and likely a turnover in change for management and coaching before a jersey retirement comes. Paul getting sent home has complicated more things. The giveaway is over, and Paul’s jersey retirement will need to see changes in management and coaching to confirm that night as a celebratory one.
