Chris Herrington has covered the Memphis Grizzlies, in one way or another, since the franchise’s second season in Memphis, while also writing about music, movies, food and civic life. As far as he knows, he’s the only member of the Professional Basketball Writers Association who is also a member of a film critics group and has also voted in national music critic polls for Rolling Stone and the Village Voice (RIP). He and his wife have two kids and, for reasons that sometimes elude him, three dogs.

Three weeks ago, the Grizzlies were 4-11 and sinking fast, having lost nine of their previous 10 games.

Now they’re 11-13, still underwater but very near poking their heads above the surface, winners of seven of their past nine games.

It hasn’t been ostensible top star Ja Morant who’s led this rebound. He’s been watching from the bench, sometimes in a Grizzly-esque coat. There, he’s been joined by the summer’s top free agent, Ty Jerome, and veteran franchise stalwart Brandon Clarke.
