Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. came to the Nets with the thought of showing more of what he could do compared to what he did for the Denver Nuggets behind center Nikola Jokic. So far this season, Porter has showed that he can be an impactful player for Brooklyn and it looks like his value is rising in the eyes of some around the league.

“Don’t look now, but Porter has remained a high-functioning NBA player, even away from the bosom of Nikola Jokic,” Justin Verrier wrote on Porter for The Ringer. Porter ranks 72nd on The Ringer’s NBA player rankings as of Nov. 26 as it seems that Porter is showing that he is more than someone who benefitted from sharing the floor with Jokic.

“There was plenty of worry that the player who has long sought a starring role would become an empty-calorie chucker for a Nets team playing for nothing but lottery odds, but Porter has been a productive and helpful option on both ends—a true rarity in Brooklyn,” Verrier continued. “The games have had virtually no stakes since opening night, but another month of this and Porter becomes an intriguing trade candidate for contenders in need of his stretch and size.”

Porter, 27, is having by far the best season of his eight-year career is he is averaging 25.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 49.6% from the field and 39.2% from behind the three-point line. Porter is currently on pace to notch per game career-highs in points, rebounds, and assists while maintaining shooting percentages near what he has averaged for his career.

To Verrier’s point, many pundits believed in the offseason that the Nets were getting the worse end of the deal that brought Porter and a 2032 first-round pick to Brooklyn in exchange for forward Cam Johnson. However, with the way that Porter has played this season, it’s possible that he has increased his value in the league, especially if he is able to garner some All-Star game votes along the way.
