Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier pleaded not guilty on Monday to federal criminal charges tied to an illegal gambling investigation that has sent shockwaves through U.S. basketball.
Rozier, 31, was arrested in October as part of a probe into an alleged betting ring that prosecutors say traded on inside information — including player injuries and planned absences — between December 2022 and March 2024.
According to prosecutors, Rozier allegedly tipped off associates during his time with the Charlotte Hornets that he would exit a game early with a supposed injury, allowing co-conspirators to place advantageous bets.
In a Manhattan courtroom, Rozier firmly denied the charges: conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
His longtime friend Deniro Laster, accused of profiting from the scheme, also pleaded not guilty.
Rozier was released on a $3 million bond, secured by his Florida home and another property. Laster was also released on bail, and both now face restricted travel within the United States as the case moves forward.
An Extension Of The Jontay Porter Investigation
The investigation stems from the same broader gambling crackdown that last year resulted in the lifetime ban of Jontay Porter, the former Toronto Raptors forward accused of manipulating game outcomes for betting gains. While the NBA said in January it found no evidence that Rozier violated league rules, it added that it is cooperating fully with federal authorities. Rozier has been placed on administrative leave since his arrest.
NBA Integrity Crisis Widens
The scandal comes at a turbulent moment for basketball integrity efforts. In a separate case, Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, 49, was arrested in October and accused of participating in a nationwide scheme to rig illegal poker games. Billups — an NBA Hall of Famer and former Detroit Pistons star — has denied all wrongdoing.
