The Miami Heat reportedly have had “internal discussions” about Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant and several other “disgruntled sort-of stars.”
While Morant has not asked for a trade from the Grizzlies, it appears he is one of the players that Miami is keeping tabs on.
“I know the Heat have had internal discussions about Ja and several other disgruntled sort-of stars,” Heat insider Ethan J. Skolnick wrote in Discord. “But discussions do not mean aligned interest.”
Skolnick explained that internal talks don’t necessarily mean that all of the Heat’s decision-makers agree.
The Heat could be a team that looks to make a move in the 2025-26 season, as they are currently the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference even though they’ve lost three games in a row. They’ve been better than many expected this season.
Miami has long been known for landing star players – like LeBron James and Jimmy Butler – in free agency, but it could also make a trade to bring a star to South Beach.
This season, Morant has been banged up for the Grizzlies and struggled when he’s been on the floor. The star guard is averaging 17.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 7.6 assists per game while shooting 35.9 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from 3 in just 12 appearances.
His situation is one to monitor. But even though the Heat have reportedly discussed Morant and some other players, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re going to make a move for a star this season.
Miami has gotten off to a strong start in the 2025-26 campaign even though All-Star guard Tyler Herro has only played in a handful of games due to injury woes.
Plus, the Heat added veteran guard Norman Powell in the offseason, and he’s been an impact player for them in the scoring column. Powell, who is a free agent after the 2025-26 season, is averaging 24.8 points per game while shooting 50.5 percent from the field and 44.5 percent from beyond the arc.
As such, Miami still has some learning to do about its current roster and could reach another level once fully healthy.
The Heat still have a ways to go before the trade deadline. For now, it appears that Miami’s internal discussions are a feeling out process in case a star becomes available in the 2025-26 season or beyond.
