The Dallas Mavericks have more questions than answers throughout their entire organization, from top to bottom. One thing that still needs to be addressed is who will succeed Nico Harrison as the general manager.
According to one NBA Insider, that person is already within the organization.
Shams Charania Provides an Inside Scoop on the Next Mavericks GM
Thursday, December 11, marks the one-month anniversary of Harrison’s firing. Since then, the Mavs’ owner, Patrick Dumont, has employed a council-style leadership to run the team.
Matt Riccardi and Michael Finley have taken the mantle as co-interim general managers. Meanwhile, coach Jason Kidd and minority owner Mark Cuban have been given a more active voice in the franchise’s future.
It seems like Dumont is in no rush to name the franchise’s next GM. That person might already be close, but they would still like to explore their options, as per Insider Shams Charania.
“A GM search is still expected in the offseason,” Charania said. ” And Finley and Riccardi are expected to be candidates.”

Riccardi and Finley come from different backgrounds and have varying levels of familiarity with the Mavericks.
Riccardi started his career in 2011 as a Basketball Operations Manager for the Brooklyn Nets. He also later served as a scout for that organization before being promoted to Senior Manager in 2014. He then took on the role of Assistant GM and later, GM, of the Long Island Nets from 2018 to 2022.
In 2022, he joined the Mavericks as part of their front office and was given the Assistant GM mantle in 2023.

Meanwhile, Michael Finley is recognized as one of the most talented players to wear a Mavericks jersey from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s. Finley joined the Mavs via a mid-season trade in 1996-97 that also sent Jason Kidd to the Phoenix Suns.
Finley became one of the most prolific scorers in Dallas, which earned him two All-Star nods (2000, 2001). He played his best years with the Mavs, averaging 19.8 points per game in 626 contests.
After being waived by the Mavs in 2005, Finley opted to remain nearby. He signed with the Mavericks’ division rival, the San Antonio Spurs, and won a championship with them in 2007. He played his last NBA game in 2010 and would later return to the Mavs as a member of their front office.
