The Los Angeles Clippers’ record suggests they should start thinking about making some major changes.
A recent update coming out of Los Angeles suggests that they are shockingly more likely to stay put, rather than begin to improve their future.
Kawhi Leonard is 34 with a notable injury history and a contract that will expire next year. James Harden is 36 and could become a free agent as early as next summer.
Both should be viewed as prime trade candidates for teams who are looking to make a win-now move, but the Clippers aren’t currently believed to be interested in having those conversations.
NBA Insider Paints a Shocking Picture for the Clippers
“Steve Ballmer, he has just got this inexplicable, in my opinion, borderline insane addiction to this group, if that makes sense,” NBA Insider Sam Amick said on FanDuel TV’s ‘Run It Back.’
“… They keep rocking with this group, knowing that they’ve got all of their contracts coming up in a couple of years and they’ve been looking at the summer of 2027 for quite some time, and it feels like that’s still the road they’re going down, is sticking with what they have, as bad as this is, and it’s been awful.”
The Clippers entered the 2025-2026 NBA season with the idea of being contenders. They added notable veterans such as Chris Paul and Bradley Beal, with the idea that the talent and experience will threaten some of the Western Conference’s top teams.
Instead, the Clippers lost Beal to a season-ending injury, will inevitably cut ties with Chris Paul already, and haven’t even poked their head in the playoff picture just yet.
It’s still early, but the Clippers are sitting 14th in the Western Conference with a 6-18 record. The New Orleans Pelicans are the only team behind them, as they hold a 3-22 record.
Considering where Leonard and Harden are in their careers, it would make sense for the Clippers to ship them off to a contender. It seems the decision-makers up top aren’t willing to part ways with either of them just yet. At this point, it might take a demand from the players’ side in order for the Clippers to change their direction.
