The Boston Celtics are exceeding expectations with a 15-9 record and third place in the Eastern Conference standings.

They’ve won their last five games despite this season being projected as a rebuilding year following Jayson Tatum’s long-term injury and summer roster losses.

The Boston Celtics have positioned themselves as legitimate Eastern Conference contenders with Jaylen Brown emerging as their primary star.

Brown currently averages 29.1 points per game, ranking sixth in the league’s scoring leaders.

Jaylen Brown’s scoring approach defies modern three-point emphasis

Brown’s scoring output becomes more impressive considering his low three-point volume.

He makes just 2.1 three-pointers per game, the second-lowest among top-10 scorers behind only Giannis Antetokounmpo. His 36.3% three-point percentage also doesn’t qualify as exceptional by modern standards.

Former Celtics assistant coach Evan Turner explained what makes Brown’s scoring approach uniquely effective despite contradicting contemporary offensive trends.

“I think Jaylen has stayed true to himself and is trying to continue to expand his game, get to his spots, and obviously he’s shooting over 59% from the two,” Turner stated.

“So, when everybody else is shooting 40% threes, he’s still at least bringing in eight or nine mid-range jumpers attacking the rim.”

“And whenever you get into that paint, that’s advantageous for your offense and the defense hates it. So, that’s when you’re starting to spread and kick and he’s having a full all-around game.”

Jaylen Brown has been consistent as a great two-point shooter

Brown attempts 15.7 two-pointers per game, the second-highest volume league-wide.

The number represents a significant increase from last season’s 12.1 attempts, while his conversion rate improved from 52.9% to 54.6%.

Playing without Tatum has increased Brown’s scoring responsibilities, but statistical trends reveal a deliberate shift toward two-point emphasis predating this season.

His three-point attempts peaked during the 2022-23 season at 7.3 per game, subsequently declining below 6.0 attempts while two-point volume stabilized above 12.0 before this season’s surge.

The strategic focus has generated increased efficiency and productivity, enabling Brown to carry the Celtics beyond preseason projections.
