TUALATIN — The Portland Trail Blazers will limp into New Orleans on Thursday looking to end a losing skid with another shorthanded lineup.
The Blazers (9-15) have lost two in a row and 10 of the last 13 as injuries and illnesses have ravaged the roster.
It’s unclear when injured rotation players like Jrue Holiday, Donovan Clingan, Matisse Thybulle and Scoot Henderson will return. But, at the very least, a couple of the players seem to be making progress.
Here’s the latest regarding a few key players:
Holiday
Holiday, who has been sidelined since Nov. 14 with a right calf strain, seems to be trending in the right direction.
The Blazers’ starting point guard took part in non-contact individual work this week at the practice facility in Tualatin, a development suggesting he’s inching closer to a full return to the court. At the time of his injury diagnosis, the Blazers said Holiday would miss one-to-two weeks before being reevaluated.
But it’s been more than three weeks since he last played in a game.
“You know how those soft tissue injuries are,” acting coach Tiago Splitter said. “They’re tricky. You’ve got to be careful. When we give those dates, it’s just something that we think. But they’re always tricky. Even when I played basketball … it was hard to give a date and be sure about it. Sometimes it’s shorter. Sometimes it’s longer.”
Splitter said he didn’t “have an idea” when Holiday would return, but assuming his individual work does not spark a setback, it could be sooner rather than later.
Thybulle
There was a promising sight at the Blazers’ practice facility two days after Thanksgiving: Thybulle roaming the court, hoisting shots, running sprints, working up a sweat in individual drills.
Thybulle did not practice with the Blazers — and he has not since undergoing surgery on Halloween to repair a tear of the UCL in his left thumb — but the increased activity is a positive development. Splitter said Thybulle has continued the individual work this week and is “slowly and surely” improving.
At the time of his surgery, Thybulle was scheduled to be reevaluated in four-to-six weeks. The six-week mark arrives Friday.
Henderson
Henderson suffered a torn left hamstring days before the start of training camp and has not played this season.
The third-year point guard has participated in light individual drills in recent days, but there is no indication he’s nearing a return.
On Sept. 29, at the Blazers’ annual media day, general manager Joe Cronin said the following about Henderson’s injury:
“Hamstrings are tricky. We gave a broad timeline on it. We said four to eight weeks. I’ve been told it could be as quick as four, it could take as long as 10. And sometimes, if they’re stubborn, he won’t feel right for even longer than that. So we’re just going to rest and rehab and really be diligent about getting him back. And we’ll, of course, be smart with the tempo we bring him back at. We’re obviously thinking big-picture with Scoot.”
It’s safe to say Henderson’s hamstring injury falls into the stubborn category.
“Kind of like the Jrue situation … you’ve got to be careful,” Splitter said.
The centers
The Blazers’ top three centers have faced different degrees of ailments and illnesses in recent days.
Clingan has missed the last two games with a left leg bruise and he was a limited participant in the Blazers’ practice on Tuesday. Splitter said the starting center went through “some drills” but did not participate in five-on-five scrimmaging.
“It’s getting better,” Splitter said.
Robert Williams III has not played in back-to-backs this season as he returns from knee surgery that sidelined him most of the last two seasons, but the cause of his absence Sunday at Memphis was an illness.
But he was a full participant in practice this week and is expected to play in New Orleans.
About that illness … it spread to Yang Hansen Tuesday. The rookie center showed up to the practice facility sick and was promptly sent home.
He was scheduled to play for the Rip City Remix that night, but did not, and his availability for Thursday is unclear.
The Blazers are expected to release an injury report late Wednesday afternoon ahead of Thursday’s visit to New Orleans.
