Former Cavaliers guard Daniel ‘Booby’ Gibson is out of custody following his arrest this week in Beachwood over failing to pay a 2023 speeding ticket.

CLEVELAND — Former Cavaliers guard Daniel “Booby” Gibson is out of custody after being arrested Monday in Beachwood on an outstanding warrant from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Gibson, who played for the Cavs from 2006-13, says he was cited for speeding in Richland County by OSHP in 2023. A copy of the citation obtained by 3News shows he was clocked going 90 mph in a 70 mph zone on Interstate 71 in Washington Township, and though a date was set in Mansfield Municipal Court, he could’ve waived that requirement by paying a fine.

According to Gibson, however, he was traveling between Houston and Cleveland at the time and lost track of the ticket — never paying the fine.

Late Monday night in Beachwood, police pulled him over on Harvard Road near I-271 for having his taillights out, and though he was given a warning, officers discovered the outstanding warrant upon running his driver’s license. He was subsequently arrested and turned over to state troopers, who took him to the Mansfield area.

Per OSHP, Gibson was booked but paid a $215 fine that same night, and the matter is considered closed. Gibson, who says he is back living in the Cleveland area, sent 3News a statement reading:

“Just to clear the air — the recent report made my traffic stop sound bigger than it was. I was pulled over for my kit lights, not a speeding arrest. I missed the earlier court date simply because I hadn’t fully moved back yet. I handled it right away. What really matters to me is the 400 kids affected by the Project fire that we showed up for the day before. I’m back in Cleveland full-time to serve this community, and that’s where my focus will stay.”

Gibson spent his entire NBA career with the Cavaliers, averaging 7.8 points per game and shooting 40.7% from 3-point range across his seven seasons. He forever became a fan-favorite as a rookie when he put up 31 points in the decisive Game 6 of the 2007 Eastern Conference Finals, helping put Cleveland in the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history.
