The Celtics seemingly couldn’t buy a bucket in the second half of their loss to the Bucks, with their offense slogging through inefficient stretches. But that’s just one side of the coin. The Bucks role players also stepped up all night despite missing Giannis Antetokounmpo for another game.
Kyle Kuzma was everywhere as he scored 31 points to lead the Bucks. Bobby Portis had 27 points on 11-for-13 shooting. Finally, Kevin Porter Jr. had a triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists. That’s why Jaylen Brown jokingly compared them to the Hall of Fame trio of Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James who teamed up in Miami last decade.
“Give credit to them,” Brown said, via NBC Sports Boston. “Bobby Portis, Kuzma and Porter looked like Bosh, Wade and LeBron. They played exceptionally well tonight, but I don’t think our force was there.”
It was a forgettable offensive night for the Celtics as they were outscored 56-34 in the second half. While Boston led for most of the first half, it shot just 12-for-47 (25.5%) in the second half, including a tough 3-for-27 (11.1%) showing on 3-pointers. The looks weren’t necessarily poor, but the Celtics just couldn’t convert.
So while the C’s were flying high on a five-game winning streak, Thursday’s loss dropped them to 15-10 on the season. The Bucks also played well to pull away from the Celtics, building up a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter. It was one of those nights that happens in the NBA as the Celtics didn’t have many answers for the Bucks in the second half.
“Just a bad shooting night,” Brown said. “Milwaukee played with more force than us tonight. I don’t think we eased our way into the game. We had a good start to the game but like you gotta have the harder-playing mentality all the way through. Can’t take games for granted. Anything can happen on any given night. I think just because we had some success doesn’t mean we have the privilege of coming in and not winning the margins and kind of casually going through the game. We gotta have the right mindset no matter what.”
