The Minnesota Timberwolves could really, really use a point guard.

The trade market, which should heat up across the NBA sooner rather than later, could provide one, if the Wolves can get over a potential hold-up.

You see, they want Coby White of the Chicago Bulls, according to The Athletic’s Sam Amick.

White, a gifted scorer, shooter and distributor, would be a great addition to Minnesota’s roster, a perfect backcourt mate with Anthony Edwards.

Except that White’s contract expires after this season. And that has made putting together a proper trade package difficult.

“A Wolves source confirmed that there is legitimate interest in White, but the 25-year-old’s looming free agency appears to be a significant hindrance to a possible trade,” Amick writes. “He’s making $12.8 million in the final year of his deal and is widely expected to seek a major raise this summer. But the fear of that unknown, it seems, means this is the kind of ‘rental’ situation that drops the price point precipitously and creates a negotiating gap between the two sides.”

White has only played in seven games so far this season due to injury, but he’s been really good when on the floor, averaging 22.1 points and 5.4 assists per game.

The 6-foot-4, 25-year old would take some of the pressure off of Edwards on a roster that’s constructed with a lot of interior presence but a bit lacking on the perimeter.

At some point, the Wolves will have to assess if they think they can be good enough this season to make a rental trade worth it. For now, White’s future hangs in limbo.
