Pistons vs. Hawks: The matchup

Winners of four of their past five games, the Pistons look to put their first rough patch of the season behind them and maintain their mantle as the Eastern Conference’s best team. Detroit now sits at 19-5 and holds a 5.5-game lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers for the top spot in the Central Division and a two-game edge over the New York Knicks in the East pecking order. The Pistons are off and running on their current home stand, too, with back-to-back wins over the Portland Trail Blazers (122-116) and Milwaukee Bucks (124-112).

The Hawks are listed as 7.5-point underdogs in this one, but their record suggests them to be one of the top performing road teams in the NBA. Atlanta has the second-best road mark (10-5) behind only the Pistons in the East, and the fifth-best in the league. Atlanta sits at 14-11 on the season and is tied for second in the tightly packed Southeast Division, with young forward Jalen Johnson averaging 23.4 points, 10.5 rebounds and 7.9 assists to balanced scoring effort with star guard Trae Young sidelined by a knee injury.
