PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) – The Rip City Remix tipped off its third season as the Portland Trail Blazers’ NBA G League team, with a familiar face among the newest roster additions.
Cameron Parker, a 26-year-old guard from Murrayhill, joined the team after playing professionally around the world. The former Jesuit High School and Portland State University standout wears number 99 for the Remix.
“In life, if you’re mad that you’re just getting paid to play basketball, I think you should probably look in the mirror and re-evaluate life,” Parker said.
Parker chose number 99 because it’s the highest available jersey number.
“It’s the last number you can pick from so every day I see it when I put it on, I might as well play like it’s your last because you don’t know,” Parker said.
The journalism major previously played for the Warriors’ G League affiliate in Santa Cruz. His college career included stops at Montana and Sacred Heart University before finishing at Portland State.
Parker’s professional career has taken him to Germany, Africa and Japan before returning home to Portland.
“Even if it’s not the NBA, I am just blessed to be able to play basketball and get paid to play basketball. I was able to get my college paid for and I’ve been able to go to different countries, see different things,” Parker said.
Parker said he takes pride in being the first Portland player on the Remix roster.
“I don’t take any of this lightly, especially being the first person from Portland being on the Remix. I’m just trying to keep the city of Portland proud, I’m from Beaverton so I’m just trying to stay positive and just see it through,” Parker said.
Playing close to home has allowed Parker to spend more time with family.
“This year I was able to be home for Thanksgiving, be there for my brothers’ birthday and stuff like that so it’s definitely a whole lot easier being able to play basketball in your hometown,” Parker said.
Parker will play at home on his 27th birthday Dec. 16 when the Remix host the Stockton Kings at the Chiles Center.
