It’s no secret that the Minnesota Timberwolves need point guard help before the trade deadline. They began by inquiring about Kyrie Irving and Ja Morant when they were rumored to be on the trade market, but that dissolved. According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, they have now turned their focus to Chicago’s Coby White. White, who’s only 25 years old, is an unrestricted free agent this summer. He has been the best offensive player for the Bulls over the last two seasons, and despite battling injuries this year, continues to be the most electric performer they have on that end of the floor. The primary hurdle remains whether Arturas Karnisovas will ship off one of their youngest and most talented players. Still, with a large contract extension looming this summer, the odds significantly rise. One Minnesota reporter has since given his input on the Coby White trade talks.

“Absolutely Nothing Cooking There Right Now”

According to Jon Krawczynski, Senior Writer for The Athletic, who specifically covers the Minnesota Timberwolves, Cowley’s source lacks any credible backing. In a response on social media, Krawcynzski stated that there is nothing of substance between the Bulls and Timberwolves, and that he has no knowledge of any contact between the two organizations regarding White.

I can tell you that there is absolutely nothing cooking there right now. Could that change down the road? Maybe. He’s certainly a name to watch. But nothing percolating yet. https://t.co/Xpx5XsZIHz

This trade idea from Cowley feels like a stretch that could soon become a reality. Minnesota is clearly seeking guard help and has reportedly reached out to other clubs about the position. Chicago is on the brink of a fire sale, White is on an expiring contract, and has fielded calls regarding other players. Although this deal has not been discussed yet, it is unlikely to be surprising if it is in the near future.

Win-Win For The Bulls

With White headed for unrestricted free agency and due for a massive pay raise from his current $12 million annually, now is the time to part ways with the blossoming star. He’s not the long-term solution at point guard, he’s too small to be the cornerstone shooting guard, and his ball-dominant archetype counters Josh Giddey more than complements it. With Dallas, Minnesota, and others mentioned as potential hosts for White’s services, Chicago would do well to compare multiple offers and execute the one that yields the most youthful talent and draft assets.

Why would anyone NOT want to trade Coby White this season?

Is he a LEADER of a winning team? No.

Fans acting like Coby took them to the playoffs every year.

Why pay him $30M/Year or let him walk as a free agent.

Valuable today won’t be valuable in 6 months. Let’s be smart… pic.twitter.com/PC69N0LEgZ

Currently, the assumption has to be that nothing of substance has happened between Minnesota and Chicago. Does Karnisovas dangle White in trade talks over the next month, and does Minnesota join the group of teams vying to add him? How much can he flip the expiring asset for before he walks this summer or signs a massive contract extension?
