PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers got back at it on Friday by playing host to the Indiana Pacers looking to get back in the win column. The Sixers last played on Sunday–a loss to the Lakers–and had four days off because of the NBA Cup portion of the schedule. A matchup with the Pacers was then added to their schedule.

The Pacers have been a struggling bunch with all of the injuries they have had to go through and offered the Sixers an opportunity to get right. With the Sixers missing Tyrese Maxey due to an illness, they turned back to ole reliable to get the job done. Joel Embiid had 39 points and nine rebounds to lead the Sixers to a 115-105 win over the Pacers.

VJ Edgecombe added 22 points and five assists, Paul George added 23 points, six rebounds, and five assists, and Dominick Barlow had 10 points and eight rebounds. Quentin Grimes added 10 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.

Here are the player grades following the win:

VJ Edgecombe: A

With Maxey out, the ball-handling responsibilities fell to Edgecombe for the starting unit and he did a solid job. The Pacers play a pressure-style of defense led by their guards and Edgecombe made the right play a majority of the time. He was aggressive early as he got into the paint and made things happen on the offensive end with his scoring ability. The boost he gave in the early going forced the Pacers to adjust their style and open things up for other Sixers on offense. One should be happy with the way Edgecombe handled the ball and converted on his open looks within the offensive scheme.

Quentin Grimes: C-plus

It was a quiet start for Grimes as he was unable to find many open looks on offense, but he was able to contribute on the glass and defensively. He seemed to be all over the place and gave the Sixers some extra help in the rebounding department. In terms of his scoring, Grimes wasn’t a huge factor in that aspect, but he made some timely 3s when the Sixers needed it.

Paul George: A

The Sixers needed a good George game in this one and he delivered early. He was all over the place on the defensive end of the floor and he was aggressive on the other end. He knocked down tough looks, was helpful on the glass, and made plays with his passing with the Sixers needing somebody to take on that job. His efficiency as a catch-and-shoot 3-point option in this one was impressive as he was able to provide a safety valve for this group on that end. He had a few turnovers, but he played well overall. He made some moves in this one that should provide some encouragement for both him and the Sixers going forward.

Dominick Barlow: B-plus

Barlow ran around and did usual Barlow things in this one. He was in the right spots on the offensive end in terms of spacing and he did a great job on the defensive end and using his athleticism and high IQ to make plays on that end against this scrappy Pacers group. He does need to start knocking down these open looks from 3-point range that the Sixers are generating for him, though. He missed a couple of opportunities in this one.

Joel Embiid: A-plus

The start for Embiid was solid. He stepped out and knocked down a mid-range shot off a screen, was able to get to the line, and had a block in the early going which shows he’s beginning to figure it out on that end of the floor. When he returned to the floor after a brief stint on the bench, he looked like himself again on the offensive end. He was scoring in the post, drawing fouls, and talking a lot of trash as the big fella got into a rhythm—which is something he has desperately been searching for. He scored 15 points in the second quarter and another 14 in the third as Indiana didn’t have an answer for him. This was, by far, the best Embiid has looked all season in terms of his rhythm and the way he was moving.

Jabari Walker: B

The initial stint for Walker was interesting as he had a tough time with his field goal shooting, but he certainly got to the line at a high rate. He shot eight free throws in his initial run and was active on the glass and around the basket against this quick Pacers team. Overall, he had a few good moments with his energy and activity, and made an impact.

Jared McCain: B

The overall stint for McCain had some ups and downs. He had a few miscues defensively leading to open looks for Indiana and he had a turnover, but he was able to step in and knock down an early 3 while also making a heads up defensive play leading to a layup in transition.

Andre Drummond: B

Drummond didn’t contribute anything in this one in terms of scoring, but he was aggressive on the glass and made plays with his passing. He also did a solid job on the defensive end using his size to make life tough for the Pacers. He created extra possessions on the offensive glass and he made some big blocks in the second half to protect the basket.

Justin Edwards: D

Getting a look with the Sixers being so short-handed, Edwards had his struggles in the early going as he missed some open looks. He deserves credit for playing well on the defensive end and giving the Sixers some help on that end of the floor. Overall, though, he has to be able to knock down those open opportunities from beyond the arc.
