League Insider Gives a Peek Into Where the LA Clippers Stand on Kawhi Leonard and James Harden

On paper, the Clippers have the makings of a contender. They boast superstar-caliber talent in James Harden and Kawhi Leonard, with capable veterans surrounding them. However, reality has been unkind to them as they languish near the bottom of their conference.

These struggles have led to Harden and Leonard being thrown into the rumor mill, with some believing that the front office is considering moves ahead of the trade deadline. However, NBA Insider Ramona Shelburne thinks that the Clippers are leaning in the opposite direction.

“I don’t get the sense that they’re thinking about blowing it up,” Shelburne said. “I think they want to get back to being as competitive as they can be. They’ve been a little bit more competitive in these last few games, their defense has been better.”

She cited their loss to the Houston Rockets last Thursday (Dec. 11) as evidence that they’re starting to find rhythm.

“They are closer, they are getting better. I don’t think they are ready to pull the plug on James Harden, or Kawhi Leonard, or any of those bigger names,” she said. She also hinted that there might be some changes, none of which will involve either Leonard or Harden.

Both Harden and Leonard are putting up the numbers that have placed them in the upper echelon of NBA stars.

In 24 games, Harden has averaged 26.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 8.2 assists. Meanwhile, Leonard, through 15 games, has been a steady contributor on both ends of the floor with 25.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2.1 steals.

Despite these impressive numbers, things still appear to be going wrong for them. While the drama surrounding Chris Paul has been an unpleasant distraction, injuries have also contributed to their struggles.

The most significant of which is Bradley Beal’s hip injury, which he suffered on Nov. 8 against the Phoenix Suns. Due to that setback, Beal is set to miss the entirety of the season, leaving Leonard and Harden without a potential third option who could have provided firepower.

The Clippers need to make some changes if they hope to become a competitive team. However, there is still no clarity on what type of moves will be made, and they are running out of time to execute them.
