For much of the Boston Celtics 112-105 home loss to the Detroit Pistons on Monday (Dec. 15) night, it looked like Boston might actually beat Detroit for the second time this season. And the game was never fully out of reach until the last few plays of the game, the Celtics managing to keep things close throughout.
But the team never really seemed to seize control of the game in the way that they did in the two Eastern Conference ball club’s first meeting in late November — and Pistons star Cade Cunningham was a big part of the reason why. “He’s really good at basketball,” said Boston guard Derrick White after the loss, suggesting Cunningham’s size, and shooting were factors in the Detroit win as well.
“I think every game’s going to be difficult trying to slow him down, and obviously (he) made some big plays down the stretch,” he added.
As to what pushed Detroit over the top late in the game when the Pistons managed to hold off Boston’s last comeback attempt, White said, “I think it was a little bit of everything.”
“I think we executed well some possessions, and some possessions we didn’t. Some of those turnovers led to transition fouls or easy buckets, and then we just (weren’t) able to make enough plays on the stretch to get the win.”
