Syracuse is trying to get back into the win column after a nail-biter loss to Hofstra on Saturday. The Pride won 70-69 as frustrating call in the final seconds of the game went against the Orange, and dropped Syracuse to 6-4 on the season.
The biggest moment came down to a no-call with the clock winding down. Freshman Kiyan Anthony drove hard to the basket looking for the game-winner. It looked like Hofstra’s Biggie Patterson got a piece of him, but the whistle never came. Hofstra ran out the clock, and the upset was complete.
That final play capped a wild late rally by the Orange. Down 67–57 in the closing minutes, Syracuse ripped off 11 straight points to grab a 68–67 lead on William Kyle III’s free throws with 56 seconds left. The Dome came alive, but Hofstra answered when German Plotnikov drilled a corner three with 31 seconds to go.
Sadiq White Jr. had a chance to tie it, but split a pair of free throws. Syracuse still had hope after forcing a five-second violation on the inbounds play, setting up Anthony’s final drive and the controversial finish.
Now Syracuse looks ahead to Mercyhurst, who are 4-7 overall after losing 80-47 to Davidson on Saturday, and dropping five of their last six games. It will be a first meeting between the teams.
