NEW YORK — The game and success, Norman Powell said Thursday, is what continues to motivate.

But as the veteran Miami Heat guard deals with a series of nagging issues, there also is an appreciation of more at play.

Such as a potential contract extension.

Such as a long-awaited first All-Star nod.

So, yes, on the injury report ahead of Thursday night’s game against the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center with calf discomfort, but also vowing to play through, as he has with a series of other ailments this season.

“I think it’s not too much of a concern with me. I mean, every place that I’ve been, every organization knows what type of player I am, my mentality, playing through injuries, trying to be on the court as much as possible,” he said after Thursday morning’s shootaround. “I always tell them, like, I’m a player that I broke my hand in a game back when I was in Toronto, and I went back in the game and played. I played through strains and things like that. I push my body to the limit.”

Eligible for an extension, Powell otherwise becomes a free agent in the offseason.

“If I can’t physically be able to run up and down the court and do the things that I know I’m capable of doing, then I’ll listen to my body and sit out,” he said, downplaying the contractual elements. “If not, then I’m going to play through every nagging injury, every small bump and bruise. So my mentality is to play through injuries, everybody knows it about me. So I’m not too worried about it.”

And then there is this week’s start of All-Star voting, with Powell, 32, narrowly missing his first nod last season while with the Los Angeles Clippers.

“It’s always been a goal of mine since I was a kid,” he said. “But a lot of that stuff is out of my control. I know a lot of people have talked about it since last year. People have talked about it this year.

“My job is to go out there and play the best brand of basketball that I know I’m capable of playing and helping the team get wins and get back on track. Obviously, individual accolades are great, and you want that.”

But, no, not a sole goal, as the Heat seek to regain their footing on this three-game trip that continues Friday night against the Boston Celtics at TD Garden.

“But if it doesn’t happen,” Powell said of an All-Star nod, “it’s not going to make or break me. I know what I mean to my team. I know what guys and my fellow peers think of me around the league. So I think that’s more valuable than if I actually make it.

“Obviously, I want to make it. But I’m not holding too much weight on it because it’s out of my control.”

A combination of fan and media balloting select the five starters in each conference, with the seven conference reserves then selected by coaches. The All-Star rosters then will be divided into two domestic teams and one international team, with Powell qualifying to the international roster by virtue of his play with the Jamaican national team.

For now, Powell said he is soldering on because that is what the team and the games require.

“I’m only concerned when there are big injuries and it causes me to miss games,” he said. “I mean, basketball is physical. The way they’re guarding me is physical. So, I mean, I got a few cuts and scrapes and stuff, but it’s part of the game.

“As long as there’s no serious injury where it’s causing me to miss more time or anything like that, the small things are going to happen during the 82-game season.”

Waiting game

The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association held their grievance hearing Wednesday in New York regarding the league’s withholding of Terry Rozier’s salary in an escrow-type interest-bearing account, without resolution.

A formal, written ruling on the grievance is not expected until next month, likely after the NBA’s Jan. 7 contract-guarantee deadline. At issue is whether the league has the right to withhold the salary of the Heat guard as he awaits trial on federal charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, in regard to an FBI gambling probe.

Rozier and Heat representation were present at the hearing.
