Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. has had plenty of goals that he wanted to achieve since he was heralded as one of the best high-school players in the nation. Porter made it to the NBA despite having some back issues and now, he’s playing like an borderline All-Star for Brooklyn this season. He has also had dreams of being named one of the top-12 players in the conference.

“It’d be like a dream come true. It was a thought in my mind as a kid to make the NBA, but not only be in the NBA but one of the best players in the NBA, and an All-Star selection shows that progress,” Porter said on Thursday, per Brian Lewis of the New York Post. With the voting for the All-Star Game opening on Wednesday, Porter is one of the players that some are saying could make the first All-Star appearance of his career.

“But its not what I’m thinking of,” Porter continued. “I’m trying to just stay focused on the game-to-game with the group we have & stay focused on getting better, getting more wins. Then whatever happens, happens. If I make it, cool. If not, I’m going on vacation. So I’m not tripping either way.”

Porter, 27, is averaging 25.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 49.7% from the field and 39.9% from three-point land in 21 appearances this season. Not only is Porter on pace to achieve career-highs in multiple categories, but he could do that while maintaining an efficiency close to his career averages while not playing next to Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray like he did during his time with the Denver Nuggets.

Voting for the All-Star Game will continue until January, but as of this writing, Porter seems to be one of the players on the outside looking in, likely due to Brooklyn’s poor record. However, if Porter is somehow able to make the All-Star Game for the first time, he would be fulfilling a dream that he’s had for quite some time and would be the first All-Star to represent the Nets since Kevin Durant did so during the 2021-22 season.
