Harrison County rallies past Bluegrass United

CYNTHIANA — Harrison County boys’ basketball got off on the wrong foot against Bluegrass United on Tuesday night before roaring back for a 69-62 win.Â
“We’ve been fighting all year,” Thorobreds Coach Andrew Case said. “I can’t fault our guys’ effort. Turnovers have been a bit of a bugaboo for our guys this year, and they sorted that out tonight.”Â
BU jumped out to a 12-3 lead behind guard Carson Charles. The Thorobreds pulled within four points on a triple from Logan Harris, but BU went on an 8-0 run to make it 20-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter went better for the ‘Breds. HC again pulled close on two free throws from Blake Green to make it 28-26. Two more scores from BU gave them a 32-27 lead at halftime.Â
Green started the third quarter with layup to pull the Thorobreds within one score, but Charles answered with a three for BU. another score from Green pulled the ‘Breds within one, 35-34.Â
HC took its first lead since less than two minutes into the game on two free throws from Donovan Walker. Landon Kinney splashed a three to move the Breds further ahead, giving them a lead they would not relinquish.Â
Sawyer Cracraft led the Thorobreds with 19 points on five-for-nine shooting. Kinney followed with 15 points and a team-leading seven rebounds, many in the second half.Â
“It just takes one bucket to get him going,” Case said.Â
Walker was the final Thorobred in double digits with 11 points and six rebounds. Green finished with nine points, and Harris chipped in six, the only non-senior to score. Jack Midden also had six points. Aaron Jackson had three points.Â
The Thorobreds (1-4) are back in action against Calvary Christian (3-2) in Covington at 7:30 tonight.Â
Lady Cards can’t stop Wolverines in second half
Western Hills held Scott County to 10 points after intermission Tuesday and pulled away for a 42-32 victory in an 11th Region girls’ basketball clash at Billy Hicks Gymnasium.
Sakota Wilder led all scorers in the defensive struggle with 14 points for Western Hills (5-1). Malia Campbell added 11 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots, headlining the Wolverines’ 48-36 advantage on the glass.
Shelby Simpson supplied eight points and eight rebounds, while Bry’e Wolfe weaved six points for Western Hills, which overcame 14-for-54 (25.9 percent) shooting.
Western Hills also went a frosty 14-for-29 (48.3 percent) from the free-throw line, but Scott County struggled to keep up with that volume and was 11-for-18 (61.1 percent).
Belle Banner led Scott County (2-4) with seven points, while Dymon Percell provided six points and seven rebounds.Â
Kierstin Young also scored six points for the Cards and shared the team high of three steals with Jessica Horn. Gabby Young chipped in five points, five rebounds and three blocked shots. Kiley Sweeting had four points and a team-high eight boards.
Scott County went arctic in the second half to the tune of 2-for-23 shooting and finished 10-for-52 (19.2 percent) overall.
SC continued the homestand against Frankfort foes with Franklin County after press time Thursday.
