The Orange (7-4) beat Mercyhurst 76-62 Wednesday. A 14-point win isn’t concerning on the surface. It is concerning that Mercyhurst, who was 4-7 heading into the matchup, outscored Syracuse in the second half. The Orange led Mercyhurst 39-23 at the end of the first half, then were outscored 39-37 in the final 20 minutes.
“You can’t come out in the second half to Mercyhurst and do that,’’ Orange point guard Naithan George said. “That’s unacceptable.’’
William Kyle III and J.J. Starling led the way in scoring, each contributing 15 points in the win. Kyle III had another dominant performance on the defensive end, blocking five shots. He had 19 blocks over the past four games, or 4.75 blocks a game. He also had 10 rebounds, nine of which came in the first half.
Only two of the Orange’s bench players scored Wednesday, with freshman Kiyan Anthony scoring 12.
Big man Donnie Freeman remains out with a lower body injury. The sophomore averaged a team-high 17.8 points in four games this season. Syracuse coach Adrian Autry says Freeman is expected back “fairly soon”.
