The Brooklyn Nets are coming off a tough 106-95 loss to the Miami Heat on Thursday in which they weren’t able to execute in the fourth quarter like the Heat did. One of the other subplots that happened within the game for Brooklyn was rookie forward Drake Powell going down earlier in the game with a right ankle sprain. At the very least, Powell will miss one game.
The Nets announced on Saturday that Powell will miss Sunday’s game against the Toronto Raptors due to his injury and as of this writing, Brooklyn has not explained the severity of his ankle sprain. After Thursday’s loss to Miami, Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez said that he didn’t know anything about the severity of Powell’s injury, but that the team would have to evaluate him.
As of now, Powell will be out of Brooklyn’s rotation and someone will have to step up in his absence. Forward Jalen Wilson came off the bench to drop eight points and two rebounds in 13 minutes despite not having consistent playing time with Fernandez looking to play as many of the rookies as possible while leaving some time for the veterans as well.
Wilson, 25, is averaging 5.2 points and 1.1 rebounds per game while shooting 37.9% from the field and 36.2% from three-point land, but he has seen his role within the rotation decrease compared to the beginning of the season. Over Brooklyn’s last eight games, Wilson has not played in four of those games, but in the four contests he has played in during that span, he’s averaging 5.4 points and 1.4 rebounds while shooting 47.9% from the floor.
One other interesting element of the Nets’ injury report is that rookie guard Ben Saraf is out for Sunday’s game against Toronto as he is on his G League assignment. The Long Island Nets, Brooklyn’s G League afiliate, are playing in the G League Showcase in Florida, and with Brooklyn recalling rookie Nolan Traore from Long Island, it looks like he could be set for some backup point guard minutes with Saraf out of the rotation.
