Lakers superstar Luka Dončić has been ruled out of the game, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, citing a left calf contusion. Dončić exited Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers after being kneed in his left calf by a defender.
“It’s happened a bunch this season,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said, according to McMenamin, and they’ve tried to find ways to protect his legs as the season goes on.

Dončić’s absence changes Los Angeles’ game plan heading into Phoenix and gives the Suns a chance to capitalize. The NBA scoring leader is averaging 34.1 points per game, something that will be difficult for his team to replace.
Phoenix’s defense has been effective at creating turnovers when the ball is in Dončić’s hands. Without applying that pressure on him, the Suns will look to generate those same disruptions against the other Lakers players.

For Phoenix, the matchup is about more than taking advantage of the absence of a star. It also offers a chance at redemption following a narrow 116-114 loss to the Lakers on Dec. 14, a game marked by several controversial late calls. Dončić scored 29 points in the victory.
In a tightly packed Western Conference and with the holidays approaching, the Suns have an opportunity to gain ground in the standings without Dončić and deliver a statement win for their home crowd.
