The Santa Cruz City Council voted to greenlight a major expansion of the downtown last week in a meeting that included the community’s first look at a planned new home for the Santa Cruz Warriors.Â
Lookout took to the streets of downtown Santa Cruz this week to get community feedback on the conceptual drawings of the new Warriors arena. The proposed 180,000-square-foot structure is a significant departure from the Warriors’ current home at Kaiser Permanente Arena, increasing seating capacity from 2,505 to 3,000 and featuring floor-to-ceiling windows and a second-floor outdoor terrace.
Like so many aspects of the city’s rapidly changing downtown, the modern design of the new arena divided residents, with some comparing it excitedly to an Apple store while others worried that the building’s sleek aesthetics were out of character for downtown Santa Cruz.
