Newer Boston Celtics fans will recognize Brad Stevens as an elite executive running the show from the front office. However, it’s worth remembering that the 2024 NBA Executive of the Year was the coach of the Celtics just five years ago. He offered a reminder of that while getting some on-court work in with Celtics star Jayson Tatum.
Since the C’s face the Indiana Pacers on Friday night in Indianapolis, they’re already in the Hoosier State. And what better facility for the Celtics to use than Hinkle Fieldhouse, home of the Butler Bulldogs? Stevens was the head coach at Butler for six seasons and helped the program reach new heights, as the former Horizon League members made it all the way to the Final Four in 2010 and 2011.

Following his time in Butler, Stevens went to Boston. That’s where he met Tatum and developed a close relationship with the burgeoning star as his coach and then, years later, de facto general manager.
In a call back to his coaching days, Stevens was captured as an active participant in Tatum’s most recent workout at Hinkle Fieldhouse. He can be seen passing the ball to the six-time All-Star, who then blows by Celtics assistant coach Tony Dobbins for a dunk.
Tatum dunking isn’t a new sight for Celtics fans, but it’s still an encouraging one. The 2024 NBA champions is recovering from a ruptured Achilles and has missed every one of Boston’s 29 games this season.

Whether or not he misses all 82 remains up in the air, yet both Tatum and Stevens are committed to progressing through this rehab process.
