News broke on Friday that Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis is expected to miss some time on due to his latest injury. The 10-time All-Star was forced to exit the Mavs’ 126-116 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Christmas Day due to a groin injury and was not able to return.

Davis has already been linked to multiple trade reports as the 12-20 Mavs continue to struggle this season. The emergence of rookie sensation Cooper Flagg has strengthened the prospect of a potential full rebuild for the Mavs around the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft. Such a move would make Davis a valuable trade piece for the Mavericks as they look to secure future-facing assets.

Senior NBA reporter Shams Charania of ESPN revealed on Friday that Davis has been diagnosed with a minor groin strain and is expected “to miss a few games.” The Mavs, however, have not ruled Davis out of Saturday’s matchup against the Sacramento Kings, tagging their prized big man as questionable to play with a sore right adductor.

Chris Haynes shared a new report on Friday night, naming the Warriors and the Atlanta Hawks as potential landing spots for Davis. Haynes pointed out that the Warriors are currently in the market for a big man, and Davis has reportedly emerged as a target.

“I was told [the Warriors are] contemplating making a case to acquire Anthony Davis as well,” Haynes said. “And so with that being said, I was told that Dallas was not that fascinated with what Golden State has on its books.

“And so if the Golden State Warriors did really want to make a true play at Anthony Davis, they will likely have to acquire some more assets or involve another team.”

Haynes went on to say that the Warriors are “really trying to figure out ways” to try and secure a “defensive dominant starting center” ahead of what they’re hoping will be another championship push.

Golden State is not the only team on the market for Davis, though. Haynes also identified the Hawks as a side that could have the necessary assets to trade for the NBA champion big man.

“Sources tell me that the Atlanta Hawks remain very intrigued with the possibility of acquiring Anthony Davis via a trade,” Haynes said. “Now, the Hawks, out of all the shooters out there that are interested, the Hawks, they possess a pretty attractive asset package, right? That could make things interesting.”

As Haynes noted, Davis has three more years left on his contract, including this season. He also has a player option for 2027-28. Haynes pointed out that any team that acquires Davis “will have to really consider giving him an extension.”

“And so with that being said, if a deal was able to materialize between the Hawks and Dallas Mavericks, I was told it would not involve Trae Young,” Haynes continued. “Dallas would likely want expiring deals, young assets, and picks, and probably likely to include the number one pick from last season, Zach Rissacher.”

At 27, Young does not fall within the Cooper Flagg timeline. Risacher, on the other hand, is just 20 and one year older than Flagg, making him a great fit alongside the Mavs rookie, at least age-wise.
