An ugly win is still a win.

Devin Booker scored 30 points to lead the Phoenix Suns as they toughed out a 115-108 road win over the 8-24 New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, Dec. 26.

This was the Suns’ second straight win and their first of a four-game road trip, which continues Dec. 27, again at New Orleans, and closes with games at Washington Dec. 29 and at Cleveland on New Year’s Eve.

“Any way it takes, just to get a win. Thought we had some big stops down the stretch,” coach Jordan Ott told reporters after the game. “Ryan (Dunn), Mark (Williams), Dillon (Brooks). Then ‘Book’ and Collin (Gillespie) on the offensive end made plays down the stretch to somehow pull it out.”

Booker had the hot hand, shooting 10-of-16, added nine rebounds, five assists and one steal in 36 minutes. The Suns’ other top contributors were Williams, who had 24 points (9-of-13 FG) and 13 rebounds for his eighth double-double, and guard Gillespie, who scored 16, including a game-high four 3s.

“The game was a little but ugly down the stretch, but really it was just about finding a way to win,” Williams told reporters. “It wasn’t pretty, but I’m glad we were able to do it. I think that’s what we live for. Those big moments, we’re really excited for. We’re prepared for them.”

The Pelicans’ top performers were Zion Williamson, who had 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists off the bench, and Trey Murphy III, who collected 19 points and game-high four steals.

Phoenix led most of the game, which had a tight margin the whole way. There was a lack of defense at the rim, as the Suns and Pelicans allowed 60 and 66 points in the paint, respectively. Both teams struggled from deep, hitting only 20% each. The Suns also allowed 42 free throws to their own 25 and committed 18 turnovers.

The Suns led by nine early in the second half, but the Pelicans began the final quarter on a 10-4 run to take their biggest lead, five, on Murphy’s only triple at 9:14 left to play. There were four lead changes and three ties thereafter until Williams’ two made free throws put the Suns back in front for good at 4:20.

In the closing minutes, Booker and Gillespie connected with Williams on a pair of alley-oop dunks, mid-range jump shots by Dillon Brooks (14 points) and Gillespie, additional free throws from Williams, along with a Booker-assisted layup by Ryan Dunn (nine points, eight rebounds) sealed the victory.
