The Golden State Warriors (16-15) have been mediocre at best this season.
With the exception of superstar guard Stephen Curry, few in the Warriors’ rotation are meeting expectations thus far. Despite this, Golden State is continuing to attempt to contend with Curry at the helm. However, for one of the first times in roughly a decade, their chances of making it out of the Western Conference are slim.
This is leading some to believe the front office needs to drastically change their approach.
Warriors Predicted To Trade Away Stephen Curry
As wild as this sounds, NBA analyst Bill Simmons believes the Warriors cutting ties with Curry this season isn’t out of the question. Simmons, on an episode of his podcast, predicted Golden State could send the 11-time All-Star to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for LaMelo Ball.
“Are we at the point where Curry to Charlotte, we should just do it? I don’t want to upset Warrior fans,” Simmons said. “I don’t want to trade Steph Curry before Christmas, but you know he grew up there, his dad’s there, there are shots of him on the court as a kid, and he always joked about ending his career there.”
There is a small chance Curry ends his career anywhere other than Golden State, but even if he does, it likely won’t be Charlotte. The age 37 guard is competing to hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy, and the Hornets’ young core is still years away from having a real shot at doing so.
Simmons continued, “I don’t think this Warriors team has any chance. We just saw Draymond blow up last night. Can we just do LaMelo and a bunch of picks, send Curry back to Charlotte, and let’s just go?”
Ball is one of the most exciting players to watch in the NBA at 24 years old. However, he struggles to stay on the floor and is in the second season of a five-year, $203 million contract. He is averaging 19.7 points and 8.5 assists on 40% shooting in 21 appearances this year.
Although this trade would undoubtedly make headlines, no party involved comes out a true winner in this scenario except Ball, who would be given the keys to the franchise with Curry gone.
