Christmas may be over, but Mount Mansfield Union High School’s Alyce Dorman was giving the gift of buckets at the MMU Girls’ Basketball Holiday Festival. The junior guard dropped a game-high 27 points against Mount Anthony Union High school leading to a 79-20 win for the Cougars over the Patriots. Dorman scored 20 of her 27 points in just the first half alone. She capitalized on a variety of fastbreak layups, quick pull midrange jumpers and three three-pointers in the game’s first 16 minutes, some of those threes extending out near the halfcourt line. She would finish the contest with four total triples. Maysa Long also had a big scoring afternoon for the Cougars, finishing the contest with 20 points of her own. The Patriot offense was led by Haleigh Thompson, who finished with eight points. Rutland High School won the early morning matchup at the Holiday festival, taking down South Burlington High School with a 55-32 victory. Rutland was led by Brinley Gandin, who poured in a game-high 26 points. She drained three 3-pointers in the win, including two in the fourth quarter. Lola Sparks also chipped in with 17 points. Rutland and MMU will meet for the unofficial Holiday Festival tourney championship in their next VPA regular season game on Monday, Dec. 29, at Mount Mansfield High School. Tip-off for this contest is at 7 p.m. Elsewhere in the VPA, Colchester High School secured an early season two-game sweep against Rice Memorial High School after taking the 34-28 win on the road. The Lakers’ freshman guard Elle Robinson looked like a veteran on the court, leading her offense with a game-high 14 points. She scored eight of those 14 points in the first quarter of play.
