The G League’s OKC Blue returned from the Winter Showcase with a 124-123 overtime win over the South Bay Lakers on Saturday. The home victory improved their record to 1-2 on the season as it was reset in Florida.
Early on, it felt like the Blue had fresh legs. They played with the right energy as they had a 31-23 lead after the first quarter. All that progress was lost in the second frame, though. OKC only scored 18 points as South Bay flirted with 40 points. Brooks Barnhizer sustained a gnarly-looking ankle roll as he needed help off the floor.
The Blue entered halftime in a 59-49 deficit. While the offense picked up in the third quarter, OKC’s 26 points didn’t cut into its double-digit deficit. They left the third frame in a 92-75 hole. Trailing by as many as 19 points, it felt like we were on the way to an inconsequential final quarter.
Instead, the Blue made it a game. A 16-5 run by OKC trimmed South Bay’s lead to three points with a little under five minutes left. That meant we were in the middle of a crunch time situation. Shooting from the ‘Paycom’ logo, Chris Youngblood’s deep 3-pointer knotted it up at 117 points apiece with five seconds left.
The Blue scored 42 points in the final frame to mount the comeback. In overtime, Zhaire Smith was able to hit the walk-off free-throw attempts as OKC was the first to score seven points in the session. What a way to start the second half of the season with a 19-point comeback win.
The Blue shot 44% from the field and went 14-of-41 (34.1%) from 3. They shot 17-of-20 on free throws. They had 25 assists on 44 baskets. Four Blue players scored double-digit points.
Meanwhile, the Lakers shot 43% from the field and went 12-of-35 (34.3%) from 3. They shot 10-of-17 on free throws. They had 28 assists on 46 baskets. Six Lakers players scored double-digit points.
