One admirable thing about Draymond Green is that he never backs down, especially from those not wearing a Golden State Warriors jersey. That proved true during their game against the Brooklyn Nets when he went back and forth with their iconic superfan, Mr. Whammy.

Wearing a No. 1 Nets jersey, Mr. Whammy, whose real name is Bruce Reznick, was trying to distract Green as he shot his free throws with the game tied at 62-all in the third quarter. However, true to the forward’s competitive nature, he did not let Mr. Whammy’s antics pass and cussed the elderly fan.

“Sit your old a— down!” Green said after making his first freebie. He then walked toward the direction of Mr. Whammy, who was standing a few feet behind the basket. He repeated: “Sit your old a— down!”

Mr. Whammy did not bow to Draymon and continued his strategy, waving his arms and making distracting gestures. However, it did not work. Green converted the free throw, and Reznick went back to his seat.

More importantly, Green got the last laugh as the Warriors ended up winning the game, 120-107. Dray finished with seven points, five rebounds and three assists.

Green’s thoughts about the interaction

Reznick has become a fixture of the Nets franchise since he became a season ticket holder in 1998. Back then, the team was still playing in Continental Airlines Arena. And he has been trying to disrupt opponents’ free-throw routines for decades now.

Called the “Whammy,” his strategy involves a variety of distracting movements, ranging from flailing his arms, waving his hands, pointing his fingers, jumping up and down, and, of course, shouting at the free-throw shooter. Bruce believes that he is casting a curse on the Nets’ foes, causing them to fumble their charity stripe shots.

For his loyalty and the energy he brings from the courtside, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame will add Reznick and his late wife, Judy – also known as “Mrs. Whammy” – to the James F. Goldstein SuperFan Gallery beginning.

Reznick is a Nets legend in his own right, which is perhaps why Green seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed their interaction. In fact, he, together with Jimmy Butler, was smiling when he trash-talked the superfan, as seen from this angle.

“Sit his old a— down somewhere,” Green said, via Erik Slater. “Can’t be distracting me on my free throws. Go sit down somewhere. That was fun. I had a lot of fun.”

It’s safe to say that Mr. Whammy’s “hex” did not affect the Warriors at all, as they shot 28-of-34 from the free throw line.

Nets fans defend their beloved Mr. Whammy

After stunning the Minnesota Timberwolves in their previous game, the Nets had a disappointing night against the Warriors, who snapped their three-game winning streak. Michael Porter Jr. and rookie Egor Demin paced the Nets with 27 and 23 points, respectively. They dropped to a 10-20 record, good enough for 13th place in the Eastern Conference.

The last thing the Nets fans wanted was Green attacking their most beloved fan. They came to his defense on social media, expressing their disapproval of the four-time champion’s chirping. They said it was disrespectful, considering that Reznick is 89 years old.

However, Nets fans should not take Green’s words seriously. Surely, Mr. Whammy also enjoyed the exchange. He’s been doing this for a long time and knows it can get competitive with players.

For now, Nets fans should hope that Mr. Whammy’s hex will work against the Houston Rockets – perhaps they will need it if it ever comes down to the wire.
